Ayurvedic understanding of Urticaria

Urticaria, often known as hives, is a common skin condition identified by red, itchy welts on the body. They are also referred to as, weals, or nettle rash. These welts can vary in size, and form. It often comes with discomfort and irritation. Urticaria affects around 15-20% of the global population. This condition may interfere with the patient’s daily routine.

In Ayurveda, urticaria is known as “Sheetapitta.” This skin condition can be caused by an imbalance of the doshas, notably Vata and Kapha, along with the impact of Ama (toxins). While modern medicines give symptomatic relief, Ayurveda takes a comprehensive approach and addresses the root cause of the condition. So, let’s dive deep and take a deeper look at Ayurveda’s perspective on Sheetapitta or Urticaria.

Pathophysiology of Urticaria in Ayurveda

According to Ayurvedic principles,  our human body is regulated by the three fundamental energies or doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. And this condition occurs because of Sheeta’s supremacy over Pitta dosha. It is the outcome of exacerbated Kapha and Vata which can lead to skin allergies on the body. Urticaria is further categorized into two types: acute and chronic.

1. Acute Urticaria

It happens quickly and lasts less than six weeks. And, it might occur due to respiratory allergies, food allergies, psychological factors, and any infections or medications.

2. Chronic Urticaria

It happens in a handful of cases, and the rashes last for more than six weeks, months, or years. And, this might occur due to hereditary, autoimmune, and idiopathic causes.

Note: Ayurvedic treatment for urticaria is customized depending upon the person’s unique prakriti and factors such as symptom intensity, underlying dosha imbalance, and overall health.

Symptoms of Urticaria

Urticaria mainly affects the skin. Here is the following list of urticaria symptoms:

  • Twak Roga (skin afflictions): Urticaria primarily affects the skin, which leads to raised, itching welts. These welts are generally red in colour and vary in shape and size.
  • Daha (burning sensation): Due to the increased Pitta dosha, impacted people may feel a burning sensation on their skin.
  • Kandu (itching): Urticaria is indicated by severe itching. Itching can be severe and persistent, resulting in pain and discomfort.
  • Raktamokshana (bloodletting): In severe cases, urticaria may result in bleeding from the welts caused by blood vitiation. This symptom suggests the existence of Pitta dosha.

Ayurvedic Diagnosis of Urticaria: A Holistic Approach

In Ayurveda urticaria is recognized as an indication of Sheeta Pitta, a disorder caused by a Pitta imbalance, which is exacerbated by cold and wet components.   A complete diagnosis is done thoroughly to understand the person’s unique composition.

Prakriti and Vikriti Assessment

Understanding an individual’s Prakriti (innate constitution) and Vikriti (current imbalance) is essential for Ayurvedic diagnosis. By examining these, the vaidya gets insight into the root cause of the condition. The detailed examination involves:

  • Skin Inspection: Observing the colour, texture, and pattern of eruptions might give vital insights.
  • Pulse Diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha): Assessing pulse quality will indicate doshic imbalances and general health.
  • Jihva Pariksha: Examining the tongue might reveal information about the digestive system and doshic predominance.

Lifestyle and Dietary Analysis

Understanding the patient’s daily routine, eating habits, and emotional condition is critical. The problem can be worsened by irregular meals, eating too much cold or fatty food, and being under mental stress. Identifying particular triggers, such as certain meals, drugs, or environmental variables, could help in preventing repeat outbreaks. This comprehensive approach allows the Vaidya (Ayurvedic practitioner) to precisely understand the underlying cause of urticaria, opening the path for appropriate therapy.

Ayurveda’s Management for Urticaria

In the realm of Ayurveda, urticaria, or Sheetapitta, is addressed using a holistic approach to restore dosha balance.

1. Internal Therapies (Shamana)

Along with topical therapy, oral drugs correspond with the individual’s constitution and are further administered.

  • Rasayna herbs: Rasayana herbs promote immunity and energy.
  • Pitta-pacifying herbs: These herbs can help to relieve inflammation and irritation.
  • Digestive correctors: This helps to improve digestion and reduce toxin buildup.

2. External Therapies (Shodhana)

Apart from internal therapies, there are some external therapies applied to the body to manage Urticaria.

  • Abhyanga: Abhyanga is a therapeutic oil massage that soothes the skin and balances the doshas.
  • Parisheka: Gentle pouring of medicinal solutions over the affected region helps to treat Pitta.
  • Lepa: Applying cooling and calming herbal pastes helps to minimize discomfort.

3. Herbal remedies

Ayurveda provides numerous natural therapies to alleviate the pain of urticaria:

  • Triphala: Triphala is a powerful combination of Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki, that supports good skin, digestion, and detoxification. It helps to balance the doshas and relieves urticaria symptoms.
  • Gandhaka Rasayana: This sulphur-based compound detoxifies and lowers inflammation. It relieves skin irritation caused by urticaria.
  • Neem: Neem has antibacterial and anti-allergic qualities and may be taken in capsule or powder form. It helps to detoxify the blood and relieve irritation.

Key Tips for Managing Urticaria
